Eddie Sykes, what it takes to be a winner!

Eddie has made a tremendous impact on stage in this his first year of competitive body building, muscle tricks caught up with Eddie to compile the following profile. We will share with you what it takes to get onstage and win as a first timer with a first class physique worthy of a Universe Title!
Like many before him, Eddies passion for all things iron was first ignited by following in his fathers footsteps. At the tender age of 14 Eddie entered the gym and was introduced to a world that would one day lead to the physique you see onstage now.
After igniting the fire and feeding the forge of muscle strength and fitness Eddie realised to be successful he would need to train not only his body ,but his mind to. He went to on to seek many qualifications within the industry and this culminated in opening his own gym in 2015! Just a year later as the gym began to grow in popularity Eddie was hit with a huge blow that would leave him homeless!

Unfortunately on 29th December 2016, I was at work with a PT client. My phone was going off but I left it in my pocket to remain professional in front of my client. Eventually i answered the phone realising this had to be something important. My partner was calling me screaming at me and crying ‘Eddie the house is on fire, the house is on fire’.  From that, the rest is a blur. My gym is a 20 min drive away from where I live but I was in my car driving really fast. I was in a state. All I knew was the house was on fire but my 4 children and my partner were safe. My eldest daughter was 10, another daughter 4, another daughter 2 and my 3 month old baby boy!!
33995153_648405785502202_93638898462228480_nI arrived home to the whole street closed off and 5 fire engines trying to put my house fire out. Everyone was safe but we lost EVERYTHING. We were homeless! Following this I got an infection with an abscess in my left shoulder. It was sore but the NHS docs told me it was cellulitis.  I went back 10 days later and they were too busy to see me. That night at work I passed out. I was rushed to hospital and they told me I was having stroke like symptoms due to such high blood pressure. It was the abscess and it had been left untreated too long. It had tracked all down my left arm and I had sepsis. After 2 operations they discussed amputating my left arm (literally the lowest point in my life). I couldn’t see my kids due to all the pipes in me. It scared them. Oxygen, antibiotics, morphine etc and drip. Then a third operation and two weeks in hospital.  Wasted away!
eddie sykes muscletricksThey saved my arm, I decided there and then that I was going to compete because if I’d have lost that limb, I’d have always wondered how well I could have done. We  lived in rented accommodation for 8 months. We returned home to a rebuilt house. Starting a new life basically.
It’s been hard times mate. But I hate to dwell on it….. I’m on top of the world right now. I could not have done any better in my 1st year in bodybuilding!

With the help and guidance of Ricky Moore Eddie began the rebuild and with a good foundation of power and strength already there, everything began to fall back into place.

Eddie has a strong mindset and firmly believes that with the help of positive individuals around you there is now limit to what you can achieve.Without the support of his family and friends the whole rebuild may not have been possible. Always surround yourself with positive individuals.
Training style that made a winner!
Eddie remained strong as a bull throughout his prep only stepping back on the total amounts lifted towards the back end of his diet to remain safe. It is at this point, with extremely low body fat and the whole system being in a very delicate position many will fall foul of muscle tears and strains. Injuries were to be avoided at all costs if he was to step onstage in winning form.
Heavy basic movements were kept in and particular attention was paid towards perfect form in all exercises. Ricky experience in achieving strong lean physiques in his client base would be very beneficial here. Eddies experience in getting results from his own client base and his experience in what works for his on physique was a combination that few first timers would be able to match!
A 4-5 day split using all the heavy basics is a winning formula already has produced winning physiques for many years so why change what is already a proven formula. Eddie sates, “Move some weight. Form is important. Get the muscles and the core working. and then follow that up with another compound one week or isolation exercises and supersets the next. I change main compound variation too every so many weeks (Olympic flat bench to maybe incline DB bench press) On prep I follow the same best I can. But when the energy levels drop I focus more on the pump and the contraction direct in the muscles.”

Future goals.
“My aim over the summer before I prep for next years comps is to keep body weight below 110kg and to bench 200, squat 260 and deadlift 275. The feedback I have had is this is why I have the dense muscle thickness on stage coz I lift heavy all the time. The big basic lifts! The next time I prep I aim to start with a leaner physique. I will now look like a body builder year round. I need to be heavier onstage! I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ricky Moore for his help along the way, Joe and Colin at ultimate fitness for you . Richard Gannon for help on the day at the Britain finals. My brother Pete, my friends James Rose, Ollie Bell, Darren Obrien and most importantly my partner Kerry Bowe and my mum and dad. I would also like to thank Lee Archer for the show photos who has given permission for these to be used here in this profile, amazing photographer. “
Prep diet.
“The diet all through prep was hard. It wasn’t interesting at all. Kept a relaxed home cooked chest meal in as long as could but my body reacts to carbs and sugars massively! The diet was what it was and I was just disciplined to stick to it. Going as low as 50g carbs per day for many weeks. Some people don’t agree with that but it worked ! Uk show I was 93.7kg on the day. Brits I was 95.7kg. Looking 100x better. Bigger denser harder drier more shredded and main thing with my nerves I was buzzing and full of confidence.”
